Why do we have to end factory farming?

The myth that factory farming feeds the world

Supporters of intensive livestock farming often say it is needed to feed the world. But according to the FAO, about 673 million people were still hungry in 2024. Most meat and dairy is sold to people who can afford it. Meanwhile about a third of the world's grain harvest is fed to animals.

Livestock farming uses more than three quarters of the world's farmland. Yet it provides less than a fifth of our calories. Forests are cut down for pasture and for soy that ends up in animal feed.

Cheap meat is expensive

Meat from factory farms looks cheap in the shop. But the FAO estimates that the world's food systems cause at least 10 trillion US dollars of hidden costs every year.
