Politicians and moral limits
You can expect politicians to also guard the limits of moral behavior.
Politicians who lie and remain silent
Some politicians think it normal to lie to the public to defend their policy decisions. Dutch minister Jorritsma, when she was at the Ministery of Transport and Public Works, deliberately showed prognoses for the Betuwelijn (Dutch railway track to be built from the west to the east) off to their advantage. Other politicians remain silent. Minister Laurens Jan Brinkhorst of Agriculture and Fisheries and Jan Pronk of Housing, Regional Development and the Environment will only speak out about the consequences of the manure surplus for the environment, but never about animal suffering in intensive cattle farming.
Making room for business
The entire team led by Prime Minister Wim Kok tries to reduce government involvement to give business more elbow space. But at the same time government subsidies are employed to smooth over the negative effects of intensive cattle farming and to maintain export.
For now it seems our country's economy profits from this, which isn't strange because everyone who wants to undertake something doesn't encounter the slightest obstacle. Space for work is costing others their living space. Holland is built on from border to border and animals are locked into the tiniest spaces possible. Some intensive cattle farmers even dare claim that this way they are making a "constructive contribution" to the lack of space in our country!
The consequences of unbridled growth
Where will this lead?
Freedom is a great thing, but it can only exist when limits (in moral acting) are clearly maintained. We as citizens are also responsible for this, but for the broad outlines we have politics.
MAHATMA (means "great Soul") GANDHI (1869-1948 Indian politician): "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated".
Greed without limits
Minister Jorritsma has decreed that every year we need to add another 1000 hectares for business purposes. If this growth is stopped locally because the intended industrial estate still has badger burrows, the media publishes prognoses of millions in lost income. Greed at all cost is no longer a taboo. You can even complain about the money you could have made if only you had gotten your way. Nobody calls back "Be creative for a change and come up with a decent alternative".
Free trade as cure-all?
It seems as if setting limits is 'not done' or forgotten. Make way for economic development! Even poverty in the Third World can be removed by free trade, such is suggested. Almost 200 children die in the Third World every hour. Away with borders and trade limiting measures!
Is it so complicated to make exceptions for activities and production methods that are no good, and to ban export for these? Think of child labor and industrial farming. It seems as if everyone is too busy making money to think about things going wrong in the meantime. Firework manufacturers, irresponsible café proprietors, there seems to be a taboo on intervention when it comes to checking up on entrepreneurs, examples of a dangerously tolerant culture and an inert poldermodel.
Who takes responsibility?
Who still feels responsible for social developments? Who takes politicians seriously when they twist facts and put on a show of friendliness for the media? |
